We are pleased to announce that Susan Kohler MS, CCC-SLP, a licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist, will present “A Conversation You Won’t Forget: Communication Techniques for Caregivers of Persons with Dementia.” Susan is known across the country for her unique approach to communication training from her “GET CONNECTED” program. She will share some of her techniques on how to make an “emotional connection,” troubleshoot, use positive creative solutions and keep your sense of humor for delivering the best in dementia care. She’ll present a special short film, compelling and uplifting about our shared mission to support our dementia population. And for those in attendance, a chance to experience the communication techniques and join the “Commitment Club,” pledging to be the model of excellence in dementia care.

Skills Workshop: Managing the Communication Challenges of Persons with Dementia

The purpose of this workshop is to train health care leaders how to train their direct care staff and caregiving family members in practical techniques to achieve better communication with persons who are living with dementia and promote safety and cooperation with care and interactions. The faculty’s unique approach to communication with this population focuses on making an “emotional connection” as the heart of compassionate, patient-centered care. The program will have two main parts:

  1. “Get Connected”: Therapeutic Communication Techniques for Patients with Dementia and
  2. Experiential training in how to teach “Get Connected.
